Sore throat

The symptom linked to most of the medical disorders is known as sore throat. Sore throats are contagious and are mostly caused by infection in the throat. Viruses’ bacteria and flu are the main causative agents behind sore throats. The other common agents causing sore throat are strep, common cold flu and mycoplasma. The main treatment is the antibiotic treatment which affects the bacteria but not the virus.

Viruses: most of the sore throats that are caused by viruses are accompanied by runny stuffy nose, general body aches and even sneezing. These viruses are contagious and spread all over the body within no time. Though immunity is developed inside a person’s body to counteract these viruses but it requires time more than a week’s time.

Sore throat is accompanied by different viral infections too. These may be chicken pox, measles, croup and even whooping cough. The fever blister and cankers sores can be very painful at times.

The viral infection mononucleosis is one viral infection that might take more than a week’s time. This virus attacks the lymph nodes and the lymphatic system in our body; this causes white patches and also massive enlargement of the tonsils and even causes swollen glands, neck and armpits. This kind of virus causes sore throat along with serious breathing and other respiratory problems. This affects the liver thus causing the yellowing of eyes and also skin. This also causes severe body fatigue and thus the person can get tired.

This illness is less severe in children than teenagers, this can also be transmitted via the saliva, thus is named as kissing disease. Using towels utensils and hand to mouth contact also this virus can spread.

Bacteria: Strep throat infection is mostly caused by streptococcus bacteria in the human body, this apart from causing tonsils, fever and ear infection also causes damage in heart valve and kidney dysfunction.

As sore throat is caused by bacteria in these cases so it can be treated by antibiotics, this is not easy to detect via few tests that are available so to detect strep sore throat culture is always necessary. Strep test fails to detect other types of bacteria that are present but any positive signs of strep may force the doctor to give you a dose of antibiotics. There are chances that even severe cases of tonsillitis and tonsillar abscess will also be negative in these tests, even the infection from oral sexual contacts also gets negative result in these tests.

Tonsillitis, a lumpy tissue infection which affects both back and even front side of the throat. These tissues catch infection in the first two to three years of a person’s childhood. The child later develops immunity according to the surroundings he comes in contact with. There are cases that showed children with repeated cases of tonsillitis became much healthy when they were treated.

The mucous when goes down to the throat also causes infection thus sinuses and nose infections also cause sore throat infections.

Epiglottitis, bacteria caused disease is one of the most dangerous it is basically caused in the larynx of the throat and can causing it to swell thus blocking the airways. This is an emergency situation in the body and can cause serious infections and requires immediate medical guidance so as to prevent any further seriousness. This can be known when swelling becomes extremely tough and the person faces difficulty and pain while swelling. While this condition affects there is effect that can be easily noticed in the form of change in speech and it becomes muffed.

What extent are antibiotics helpful in controlling sore throat?

Bacteria are mostly killed by the antibiotics and other drugs; mainly penicillin is prescribed when there is any suspected bacterial infection in the body. There are different types of antibiotics given for different infections. These antibiotics are not able to cure viral infection in the throat. In combined bacterial and viral infection antibiotics are at times referred. There are chances that child may experience these sore throats symptoms again after taking the complete antibiotic dose. These children may require tonsillectomy.
